About the Board of Education
Under state law, a board of education has ultimate responsibility for school district operations.School board members are guardians of the public trust and, through the policies they make, are ultimately responsible for the success of public education. The board serves as the advocate for educational excellence for the community's youth and puts those interests first. The policies school boards make dictate the standards and philosophy by which schools are run and the criteria used to judge whether they are being run well.
In order to serve on a school board in Missouri a person must be a citizen of the United States; a resident taxpayer of the district; a resident of the state for one year preceding election or appointment; and be at least 24 years old. Board members come from all walks of life and serve as unpaid volunteers.Learn more about the School Board Elections.
